Bute Mills Youthscape

Appointment: 2016

Location: United Kingdom, Luton

:

Architect: HOK

After three and a half years of campaigning and restoration, the new Bute Mills facilities - formerly a 100-year iconic old steam mill in the center of the Bedfordshire town - were born. On August 24, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge unveiled a plaque to officially open the new youth center for Luton-based charity Youthscape, aimed at helping young people in the greatest need. The latter was renovated in partnership with the globally-renowned architects, HOK, working closely with the lighting designer Xavier Fulbright of Lumineer Studio and Vice UK. Though the building is not aiming for any green certification, sustainable and low-energy strategies were used in addition to low-VOC, water-based paints and low-energy LED lighting. In this context, Vice luminaires were adopted, using the most advanced LED technology while incorporating high-performance optics in central spaces at Bute Mills to highlight the warm and energetic atmosphere of the colorful premises.
