Expo 2020 Portals

Dubai Expo 2020 portals is a landmark project designed by "Asif Khan Architectural Firm" with a very distinctive form of woven carbon fiber. The landmark includes 2 substantial doors and a pathway that grants visitors access to the spectacular World Expo; In spite of the futuristic impression the design creates a special resemblance to the traditional Arabian “masharabiya”.

For the vast portals of the Dubai Expo 2020, Vice collaborated with “Scientechnic” to bring AECOM's vision of the lighting design to life. A combination of optics are used to obtain the envisioned light effect from a discreet in-ground installation. Aside from the performing aspect of the light, Vice secured a glare-free solution for pedestrians walking through the public realm delivering vertical, horizontal, & ambient illumination without visual discomfort. The optimum performance was secured through theoretical and on-site testing.

A combination of 3 lenses with different emission angles (5°, 8°, & 16°) are integrated and adjusted to provide the desired lighting effect on the 21m surface while meeting the lighting ordinances. Vice fixtures gave the ability to control the light through dynamic color mixing. It varies from warm white-3000K to intense amber color at sundown, the concept of the lighting recreates the warmth of the natural Dubai light.

The Award

The Lighting Design of this project got distinguished with “Exterior, Public Realm & Landscape Lighting Design of the Year” at the Light Middle East Awards 2021 presented to AECOM.
